The other day I was off on another one of my foraging walks and this glowing orange sight greeted me. Well.... hello you fully laden Persimmon tree!
I am almost embarrassed to say, that I had never tried one before!
I had seen them at the fruit market many times but just walked straight past. You know what its like, in a rush, lets just get what's on the list and bolt home. Do you do that? See unusual fruit and think "must try that one day"!
After the walk I googled "Persimmon" and got the low down........ I could not believe all the things you can do with them.
There were two varieties on this property -
"Astringent variety" The tannins in the astringent persimmons make them virtually inedible (I can vouch for that one) until they become really soft and juicy, just like an apricot jam texture. The flavour was absolutely delicious!
"Non-Astringent variety" This is the one you would commonly find in the fruit shop. The variety generally is called ‘Fuyu’ - it looks beautiful and is quite crispy and good to eat like an apple.
Here is a link if you want more info on all the different uses.
So good for you too!!! Flat Belly! Flat Belly! Thats all I saw!
Just one persimmon contains six grams of fibre.
The fibre in persimmons, called pectin, has an appetite-controlling feature...you feel full after eating a Persimmon.
FLAT BELLY! As soon as I read that I was in.....Persimmons are known for their stomach-soothing properties, so eating the fruit may help you feel less bloated.
High levels of antioxidants like vitamins A and C. Good for winter.
Try some and let me know what you think.
