BALI THROUGH MY EYES...... PART ONE

bali a year in my garden

I have been to Bali many times over the years....the first time was to mend a broken heart, and during that 2 month stay (it was a badly broken heart) I discovered the "other" side of Bali. Not the drunken aussie...go to bars and get drunk Bali, but the beautiful spiritual side... I would like to share my photos of how I see Bali.  I know for some people they only see the pot holes in the road or the stinky garbage....

These are the things I see.....

FIRSTLY...FLOWERS AND MORE FLOWERS.....

A YEAR IN MY GARDEN BALI FLOWERS

I helped make this....

Every couple of days the gorgeous urns were topped with fresh flowers, I was curious how the flowers stayed on top and a patient Balinese young girl allowed me to help prepare one of the bowls. It was pretty simple really... the bowl was filled with 3/4 water, then you put a type of grass as the base ....I think it was shredded pandanus leaf, we then placed the flowers on top in a pretty pattern of your choice. The flowers are purchased by the scoop in markets, that are  sold specially for offerings and decorations. I am so going to do this at home in our birdbath!  Save those grass clippings....or maybe sphagnum moss?

A YEAR IN MY GARDEN FLOWRS AND BALI

Everywhere you turn there are flowers festooning statues or maybe....there might just be one flower thoughtfully placed.....

What can I say....smiley happy people everywhere....no stress...no aggro! Even those women working in the rice fields had big smiles for me.. and no I don't want a sarong thank you.

I couldn't believe how the sarong lady popped out from nowhere in a rice field??? Just gorgeous :)

A YEAR IN MY GARDEN CHILLI BALI CAMPAIGN BRIEF

Do you know I have never ever had Bali belly once in all the times I have been here. The secret.... CHILLI! I am sure if there is going to be any bug/parasite in your gut they will be completely killed off by the end of your meal.

Do you know that the local villagers carved this tree, Balinese style, out of styrofoam...pimped it up with green glitter paint....it took them 3 weeks....they are Hindu and they are awesome in my books.

Now I come to the Christmas celebrations....I was a bit worried with how I would feel, being all the way over here, away from the family and wasn't quite sure how it was all going to play out. Well.....were we relaxed...tick...did we do something amazingly different...tick...were we with an amazing bunch of friends....tick...were we in the most incredible place in Ubud Bali....big tick! Did we miss family...YES! I just wanted to bring them all over here to share this wonderful experience. All I'm going to say is you gotta come here....

VILLA KALISAT

Click on the link above and check out their website. Thank you Bene and Kim best hosts ever, nothing was too much trouble.

Bene has an amazing knowledge about the real Bali!

What we especially loved was that you walked through a Balinese village to get to Villa Kalisat. You get to see the villagers go about their daily lives, washing, cooking, cuddling babies.....

A YEAR IN MY GARDEN

As the morning sun shines on a piece of silken fabric.....

This is the view that greeted us as we walked up the path to our days adventure. Not a bad way to start the day!

Christmas Day.....

a year in my garden christmas dinner

Preparations are now in earnest for the Christmas dinner......the suckling pig (live) was delivered earlier that day and is ready to be cooked over a burning coal fire for 3 hours. So different to my glazed leg of ham that I normally do each year. Some people may find the next photos confronting....so I'm just issuing a little warning.

A YEAR IN MY GARDEN CHRISTMAS FEAST BALI UBUD SUCKLING PIG

I just love this mans face....oh and the SMELL of that little piggy cooking away.

a year in my garden pig turmeric

They basted the suckling pig with Balinese herbs and lots of Turmeric...

Nothing went to waste.

Sausages were made using the intestines, they were stuffed with aromatic herbs. I know this might gross some people out, but I suppose my Greek background makes this all so normal. Arth enjoyed the super crispy tail.....me crispy ears..... I can still hear that crunch. I warned you that this might not be your thing.

And with the village band playing Gamelan music in the background...we watched this dramatic sunset....

It was a truly special Christmas.

In my next post I have to share some of the food experiences that we had....cooking school...markets, the green village and visiting the Holy Springs.

I would love to hear of your experiences that you have had in Bali good or bad!
