How about a trip to Cabramatta to transport you.....
If I had to pick a favourite cuisine and to be slightly morbid, if I had to order a last meal, Asian food would be right at the top of my list. Visiting Cabramatta and asian precincts (most cities have multiple precincts) is something that we do quite regularly and we don't even have to leave the country to feel like we have been on a trip to another country.
Even if you are not into noise, crowds and strange looking foods...
Then I would still say go!
Looking around for somebody to help me, I picked these Bitter Melons up (not knowing what they were) and I must have had a blank expression on my face. What are they? Secondly what do I do with them? Next thing I know, I've got 2 recipes using Bitter Melon, from a couple of delightful ladies! They were so excited that a western woman was curious and interested about their food. Food brings people together, a commonality that crosses over on so many levels. On the menu that night Stir Fry Beef with Bitter Melon. An acquired taste but delicious! Would never have cooked this if not for one of those passionate women.
Thank you! xx
Now let me take you on a whirlwind Cabramatta tour....
You will see lots of gorgeous colours, strange shapes, spiky fruits, shiny vegetables.
Don't forget to write a list before you leave home to stock up on all your Asian ingredients.
Lots of great takeaway to take home and try.
Smiling man carrying crispy pork.....he obviously saw my look of delight and drooling expression. OMG how crispy is that pork!
Take the kids.......a great way to get them interested in food and a different culture.
Have you ever had a Banh Mi Thit? Vietnamese pork rolls.... $3.00. YES $3.00!
I could do a whole blog post on this!
Hey check out these incredibly rare roses.
Without fail, no matter how full I am after lunch, I can't go past the Malaysian version of Ice Kachang.
These sweet shops are dotted all around the place and I have tried them all!
All you have to do is choose what goes into the cup...
Agar Agar jellies, tapioca, shaved ice, syrup, red beans, palm seeds, grass jelly, psychedelic syrups etc etc, so colourful.
This dessert is very very healthy and really really good for me......it's the red beans I'm sure!
I have popped in a link to a food tour company, aptly called I Ate My Way Through Cabramatta perfect for people wanting some inside info and also have a person to show them around.
Or you can wing it like we do, just take your curiosity and love for food and Asian culture.
